About Me

I’m a theoretical physicist interested in black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity. I’m currently a Heising-Simons fellow at Arizona State University and a member of the QuRIOS collaboration.

Starting Fall 2025 I’ll be a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Research

My research lies at the intersection of theoretical cosmology, black holes and quantum gravity.

  • Black holes are some of the most extreme gravitational objects in the universe and hold the key to understand fundamental properties of gravity. My research utilizes tools from holography, quantum information theory and effective field theory to study the quantum properties of black holes.

  • Theoretical cosmology is a framework to study the history, evolution, and future of the universe. Current observations indicate that our universe started out in a period of rapid accelerated expansion known as ‘cosmological inflation‘. One aim of my research is to characterize the properties of this phase and connect it to observations.

  • Unification of quantum physics and general relativity into a theory of quantum gravity is a driving question in modern theoretical physics. Quantum gravity is crucial to address some of the universe's biggest mysteries, including the nature of black holes and the origin of dark energy. My research in this area sheds light on the low-energy implications of quantum gravity and its observational prospects.

Short CV

I grew up in the Netherlands and obtained my PhD in theoretical physics in 2019 at the University of Amsterdam in the string theory and cosmology group in. After that, I moved to the United States and held postdoctoral positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Arizona State University.
